Janae Baker, M.S.
Faculty Advisor: Shawn Utsey, Ph.D.
Janae Baker is a doctoral student in counseling psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University, whose research explores the intersection of Black women's identities, patient-provider relationships, and maternal mental health, with a focus on postpartum experiences. Working from a community health perspective, she aims to develop culturally responsive clinical skills that recognize and address the unique challenges faced by Black women, utilizing a framework that acknowledges and counters the impacts of misogynoir. In addition to her clinical work, Janae is interested in advocacy, policy, and consultation to drive systemic changes in healthcare. She is particularly drawn to the role of interpersonal community interactions and informal support networks in mental health, exploring how these networks can foster well-being and resilience.
